If you do not subtract imports from GDP, you're counting the consumption and stockpiling of products that weren't produced domestically as GDP, which is wrong. You'd be counting the import surge to beat the tariffs as if those imported goods were produced in the US, which they were not.

You are counting foreign production imported to the US as domestic production. and then claiming that because we imported more foreign goods, we must have had a large increase in production of domestic goods.
