If China is selling a pillow for $5, then a tariff of 30% is added, China reduces the base price of the pillow to the minimum they think it will still not effect sales. So lets say they bring it down to $4, so with the tariff, the price when the American consumer buys it, will be $5.20

So China is losing here. Eventually if Trump keeps raising the tariffs, there's only so much of a discount that China can apply. When that happens, people will stop buying Chinese made when the American made product isn't a whole lot more expensive.
