As long as the status quo holds, of course western governments would rather keep a stiff upper lip, they'd have nothing to gain openly antagonizing China now. But if the chinks were actually to attack Taiwan, they wouldn't be able to pretend nothing's wrong. If the US doesn't do anything, it would effectively lose its status as the world's top dog.
