Check out the affordable care act marketplace. I quit last year but cobra was too much. Aca worked out to free even with the half year worked. However if you take cobra I don't think you get a special enrollment and have to wait until regular enrollment. I got another HSA qualified high deductible plan, I did lose my deductible I had paid my employer account but had HSA savings to cover any emergency. Had to pay back a little if the credit at tax time but not much. New plan is better than my employer high deductible as some thing are cheaper. But not sure on a family, but may still be cheaper than paying cobra even if you get a new deductible aca can start the next month after you enroll. Chip might be available for the kids. At least in my state Medicaid they have limits on savings so you really have to be completely broken. Home births are great. If your wife is up for the task their is no reason not to do it. My last daughter was born unassisted at home. I caught her in my hands and handed her to my wife.
