The value of gold hasn't increased very much over the past ten years or so, but the value of the dollar (and literally every other fiat currency pegged to the dollar) has decreased, meaning it takes more of those dollars to buy the same ounce of gold. Boomers remember what their parents told them after the great depression and understand that precious metals hold value over generations, unlike cash of any sort. Even modern day wealth managers will recommend anywhere between 10%-25% into precious metals (mostly gold, though there are strong arguments for silver based on the current GSR).
