/XMR/ Monero General

Welcome to the /XMR/ Monero General, dedicated to the discussion of the world's most widely adopted privacy coin.

Monero payments are anonymous, low-fee by design and fully fungible, meaning users can send XMR globally without issue and receive XMR without having to worry about tainted coins. Battle-tested privacy tech (Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses and RingCT) ensures that critical TX data cannot be gleaned from the Monero blockchain. Thus by default, the TX history of all Monero users is kept hidden from the prying eyes of adversaries, with TXs being optionally transparent via the aid of a view key.

Monero algorithmically ensures low TX fees by employing a dynamic (elastic) block size that can "stretch" to easily accommodate sudden TX spikes.

Monero's bespoke mining algorithm, RandomX, is optimized for devices using general-purpose CPUs e.g. desktops, laptops, smartphones, tablets, keeping the barrier to entry low and ASICs out of the equation.

Monero's tail emission - 0.6 XMR every block forever - financially incentives for-profit miners to keep mining, helping boost long-term network security. This constant linear inflation asymptotically trends to zero and is offset somewhat by a steady rate of coin loss.

Monero has thus far proven to be the only altcoin capable of overcoming BTC's network effect by driving it out of the darknet economy BTC dominated for over 10 years. Monero is now also starting to overtake BTC in clearnet commerce as well. See below.

START MINING IN P2POOL

P2Pool combines the advantages of pool and solo mining; you still fully control your Monero node and what it mines, but you get frequent payouts like on a regular pool.

P2Pool has no central server that can be shut down/blocked because it uses a separate blockchain to merge mine with Monero. There's no pool admin that can control what your hashrate is used for or decide who can mine on the pool and who can't. It's permissionless!

Decentralized pool mining (P2Pool) is pretty much the ultimate way to secure a PoW coin against 51% attacks. Once P2Pool reaches & maintains 51%+ of the total network hashrate, Monero will be essentially invulnerable to such attacks.

Although many inexperienced miners think that bigger pools give better profits, this is absolutely NOT the case. Your profits in the long run depend ONLY on your hashrate, NOT on the pool's hashrate.

YOU CAN NOW MINE IN P2POOL FASTER & EASIER THAN EVER BEFORE WITH THE GUPAX GUI. USES TRUSTED REMOTE NODES BY DEFAULT!!!!

1. Download the *bundled* version of Gupax for your OS here: gupax.io/downloads/
2. Extract somewhere (Desktop, Documents, etc)
3. Launch Gupax
4. Input your Monero address in the [P2Pool] tab. USE A SEPARATE MINING-ONLY WALLET!
5. Select a Community Monero Node that you trust, although you can and should run your own node if possible.
6. Start P2Pool
7. Start XMRig

You are now mining to your own instance of P2Pool, welcome to the world of decentralized peer-to-peer mining!

NOTE THAT DUE TO BOTNET SHENANIGANS XMRIG IS AUTO-FLAGGED AS MALWARE BY MOST ANTI-VIRUSES, SO DON'T FREAK OUT!!!

How to *safely* acquire, store and spend XMR

An optimal XMR user set-up involves 2 separate wallets: an offline cold wallet (savings account) and an online hot wallet (chequing account) for everyday spending. XMR amounts larger than a few hundred dollars worth should not be stored on a hot wallet for obvious reasons. So ideally, you'll want to direct all payments/donations to your cold wallet by default and then transfer smaller amounts over to your hot wallet as necessary.

Relying on 3rd party hardware wallets comes with certain security caveats so they are not recommended. Instead, its surprisingly easy to engineer a very robust storage solution yourself using readily available hardware: a laptop and a smartphone.

Laptop

This will be running Featherwallet and must be *permanently* disabled from ever connecting to the internet again! That means physically removing the M.2 Bluetooth/Wi-Fi card and gumming up the ethernet port with superglue.

OS should be Linux rather than Windows, preferably a Debian-based lightweight distro. Encrypting the relevant user directory with LUKS is recommended but not essential.

It must have a functional webcam.

Smartphone

This can be your primary device. It will host both your hot wallet e.g. Cake, Monerujo, etc and the NERO view-only wallet that is paired with your laptop.

To set everything up: 4rkal.com/posts/feathernero/

NOTE: if you don't have a laptop you can use another smartphone and install the ANON wallet onto it, its essentially the same thing but with somewhat weaker security guarantees. Video guide: youtube.com/watch?v=oJqYzZyqyno

In a nutshell

- you accept all (substantial) payments to your cold wallet.
- you monitor incoming payments on NERO.
- you initiate the transfer of funds from your cold wallet to hot wallet on NERO and sign the TX on your laptop via QR codes.
- you spend the funds and help grow the XMR economy.

FYI this is the most secure storage solution currently available.

pedo general

Bitcoin's price = NOT the result of organic real-world supply & demand = NOT sustainable

Wash trading has been artificially driving BTC's insane price action since the first major spike in 2013.

Wash Trading 101

1. create/maintain the illusion of high volume
2. wait for poor unsuspecting fools to FOMO in
3. dump at a fat profit and leave them holding the bag

When the supply of gullible fools finally runs out, the entire scheme implodes.

TL;DR: exciting price action means nothing in an unregulated market rife with such manipulation, real-world utilization is the ONLY reliable metric of actual value.

Irrational hatred of privacy technology is the gayest thing I could ever imagine. Imagine hating privacy. Boggles the mind.

t. bought 16 for 480 and forgot about it

this just reminded me, it would be cool to set up XMR<->ZEC swaps. They would probably be cool with adding a new opcode for adaptor-signature based swaps. What do you guys think?

Someone used it to launder a major BTC theft, pic rel.
Congrats on buying at such a terrible price btw. Protip: buy low, sell high.

Yeah I was a fucking tourist that day. Intend to baghold it for 20 years

IDK I think it should just be something reasonable like ~$1000.
The real question is, in this universe, how do you scale monero? Do you have many forks and do atomic swaps between them? Payment channels?
I think the solution that would be most interesting for the plot is to have monero inside of some type of verifiable casascius coin. Something like this: store.coinkite.com/store/3-pack-v4
In order for that to work, the cost of breaking the monero out of the coin through chip hacking (youtube.com/watch?v=Pp4TPQVbxCQ) has to be much more than the amount of monero in each coin. So it has to be something reasonable per device. Like maybe ~$100 with in each physical crypto device.
But the "physical cryptocurrency" idea is pretty interesting. it opens itself up to a lot of plot elements.

Maybe cryptocurrency is seen as a liquid form of money, and its value is measured in some commodity that will be useful in a robot world like copper or some standard computer chip.

don't sweat it bro. I assume most people here bought at like the $200-100 range. but that's not like "make it" for like under $10000, and xmr holders are pretty ideological. The question isn't whether or not you will fill your bags, it's whether or not you could have made a better investment in the same time period, or if monero shuts down for some technical or political reason before it returns as a top market cap crypto.

XMR<->ZEC swaps

who the fuck needs that?

fair.png - 595x644, 233.68K

Any updates on the somalians? Heard one of them got taken as hostage.

so monero and zec gonna keep getting kicked off of exchanges.

monero doesn't have scripting. it's really difficult to do atomic swaps with it because no HTLCs. you need the other cryptocurrency to implement HTLCs and adaptor signatures. Currently this is done with scriptless scripts, which are really inefficient. Zcash is probably willing enough to do hard forks to implement adaptor signatures as part of their protocol.

Essentially, you could use zcash as a base for atomic swaps. So instead of doing USD<->LTC<->XMR, with USD<->LTC on a highly regulated exchange that bans privacy coins and LTC<->XMR on an unregulated coin-coin exchange, you could do USD<->LTC<->ZEC<->XMR where LTC<->ZEC<->XMR is done pretty cheaply through decentralized atomic swaps.

Tbh the biggest thing discouraging me here is just that zec tokenomics are soo bad. It really discourages me from doing any "free work" when it essentially just profits electric coin co. Also with the new address scheme, that might fuck things up, so better to wait after fcmp++.

Maybe we could do scripting on wownero? or maybe just try doing it directly with LTC? or maybe the solution is to just start a new constant-emission cryptocurrency based on randomx. You could call it "swapero" or "scriptero".

keep getting kicked off of exchanges.

Yeah, and? The sooner everybody is forced to DEXs the better.

what do you think DEXs are? it's atomic swaps.

I have thought about it since and I don't think any equivalent is needed, XMR is the standard and everything is just priced what it would be, so a battery can be 50 XMR and I have to essentially make it look like $ as it just now is for robots what $ is to us.
I'm not sure where you got the physical chip idea from as I figured it would just be integrated into the OS of the robots I guess. You basically get born with a wallet.

I'm really trying to think about what would happen in real life if XMR became the standard in a scifi future.

The physical chip idea comes from the fact that it allows you to give someone cryptocurrency without making a transaction on the blockchain. It's a form of off-chain scaling, that works because the chip itself acts as the custodian of the coin, not the users. When you hand someone a physical crypto device like that, the value is based on the idea that the person giving it to you doesn't have access to the private key and thus can't spend it. The person holding the chip is suspending their access to the private key. It isn't helped by having a crypto wallet in your head.

I'm really trying to think about what would happen in real life if XMR became the standard in a scifi future.

It would be a nightmare without some new scaling solution. Monero transactions are much larger than bitcoin transactions, by an order of magnitude. even with increases in block size it couldn't scale to a global network.

Now I get it, then chips would make a lot of sense, would be nice for gameplay as well since players can collect them. But it kind of sends the wrong message, it's supposed to be pro crypto propaganda obviously and having chips that don't just get sucked into your UI/wallet is weird.

The real question is, in this universe, how do you scale monero? Do you have many forks and do atomic swaps between them? Payment channels?

monero is already more scalable because of the sub percentage inflating suppy

big tech requires massive data centers

they need nuclear power and lots of oil

nuclear plants are closing down and net oil production globally is going to zero in a few decades as EROEI goes to nothing

bitcoin mining will shut down

all the shitcoins will collapse to nothing when cloud companies go bust

all the banks will go dark

all monero needs is an old computer and any power source

So all you need to do is hold the last digital currency before the world goes back to analog and you are next elite. Why wouldn't monero be an investment?

100 XMR to make it

it would be cool to set up XMR<->ZEC swaps.

Leave zec to die in a ditch.

nuclear plants are closing down and net oil production globally is going to zero in a few decades as EROEI goes to nothing

EROI doomers are always wrong.
