Well here's the thing - first of all, I'm in total support of importing real geniuses. It's the entry level positions that I'm moaning about. As for the difference? Really about freedom. usa h1bs need to be continually employed, i.e. they can't just leave a job and stay in the country. This makes them much less mobile (i.e. less or no job hopping) and subsequently means they have much less leverage in negotiating salary etc. There's been substantial evidence to demonstrate that tech H1bs have been working much longer hours on average and for less pay, all because of a diminished ability to play hardball with the bosses. This is why job postings for H1B positions aren't bespoke offers to genuinely exceptional experts - which, again, would be fine - but instead are largely offering entry level positions to someone who's going to work longer hours cheaper. (And frankly is probably grateful just to be in the country.) Musk explicitly tweeted all this, by the way. He saw it as a wonderful thing. But then the American grads are harmed by a worse job market, education loses some value, careers are farmed out instead of nurtured, and neoliberal free trade types smugly explain that this is Much More Efficient.
