The state pension here (UK) is less than minimum wage. I never understood why people contribute to it or take the retirement age seriously. If you can't stop working in your 60s then you fucked up.

It's retarded to tryhard grind to qualify for the state pension. First of all nobody our age is going to get it because it either won't exist by then or the age will be raised so high that we'll be dead before we can claim it.
And second of all if you don't get the full amount then other bennies make up the difference anyway because it's a pittance.
Both my parents died before retirement age and unlike a private pension all that money just disappears into thin air when you die.

Because there is no state pension pot. It's a benefit that you can claim after a certain age and it's just called a "pension". None of your NI contribution gets invested into anything, it literally gets funneled immediately into paying for existing pensioners and another percentage of it goes to pay for the NHS.
The UK actually has one of the lowest NI contribution rates in the developed world and if it was allocated according to financial reality the payments would be far less generous than they are today. Most people outlive their retirement age by almost two decades and the vast majority of them end up taking way more than they contributed throughout their working lives.

That's why the government made workplace pensions mandatory. State pensions will eventually have the triple lock removed and they will just let inflation eat it away. Anyone who doesn't have a private pension pot is absolutely fucked.

Also keep in mind you need at least 85k in your private pension to get a decent annuity when you retire. And the annuity is fixed until you die, unlike state pension that keeps going up above inflation. And that's invested money which should have grown during your contribution years. How many people receiving state pension you think contributed with anywhere near 85k towards national insurance during their working lives? I'd say the number is fewer than 20% of workers and that's being optimistic.

How are normies not able to retire by 55 at the latest? I need to prepare to live to 100 because my family members live into their late 90s but my most pessimistic estimate is that I'll be retired at 50. Just save your money instead of buying useless garbage all the time, not that hard

like how people working today have to pay more into CPP (forced pension) than boomers for no reason
and how when we die it doesn't get passed to anyone, just gone forever
and how CPP is managed and pays thousands of people to manage it but it underperforms their base line index fund
or how boomers can be multimillionaires and still claim guaranteed income supplement (1k/month paid for by current taxpayers) by hiding their income by reducing their RRSP withdrawals and getting capital gains
or how employment insurance is paid out to seasonal workers every year and they take out more than they contribute
and how I can't access any employment insurance that I contributed unless I get laid off. If I'm fired or quit I get nothing despite putting tens of thousands dollars into it
or how we bring in mass immigration to support government programs which hurts wage growth and pushes up house prices, despite it being a completely unsustainable solution

It's like every government program is designed to siphon a little bit more wealth and power to people in positions of power in institutions and to boomers. There's no fucking way any of this shit is going to be around in 30-40 years when it's time for me to "retire", they would have probably pushed the age you can withdraw your own money to 80 by then.

Fortunately I'm still able to save a lot of money from having a decent wage, and I should be able to retire in my 30s, but that would mean not owning a house unless I worked another 5-10 years which is bullshit. People born 5 years earlier in my position would have had cheap 200k detached homes, meanwhile homes nowadays go for 800k. Our country is being rugpulled and we're not even getting a rug out of it.

Lucking into buying crypto in 2017 has helped a ton for me to get where I am.
I've lived a frugal life though with a 40-50% savings rate, even without crypto I could probably retire in my 40s in this shitty rent controlled apartment. I got into CS which pays better than average but I wasn't smart enough to get into FAANG so I've never had an insane salary, started at 70k, up to 110k now. Lived with multiple roommates for years, worked during university and took some semesters off to work so I took 5 years to graduate but I graduated debt free. Took public transit well into my 20s until I got a toyota corolla which I still drive today.
I don't know how zoomers are ever going to retire, just rent alone is fucked up for them, but add on shit wages, and cost of everything else going up, it's so much harder for them.
I get it's easier for me as a zillenial, but it's insane how much easier it was for people just a few years older than me. Like I went to high school with people 4 years older that bought a house in their early 20s that started working out of high school because an average detached home was 250k at the time and jobs paid 50k. That's impossible now, the same house is 800k now and that job pays 60k and only hires if you have a college degree.
