people underestimate how physically punishing working in the trades is. not even just freak accidents, but the injuries that come from repeating relatively mundane actions. I guess the office version of this is carpal tunnel. I also prefer the security of working an office job with retirement, insurance etc. the only thing you worry about is an economic downturn where they layoff 10% of the bottom performing staff. the real downside of office work is dealing with the people who have jobs where they don’t really do anything. you get scheduled for really useless meetings and get subjected to this “relationship building” all because some people have a job where they aren’t required to produce measurable output each week. part of this is due to more women in the workplace. I’ve worked on comparable projects with male and female project managers where the woman will schedule 10 meetings for every 1 that a male pm would. that said, I still prefer office work. the do-nothing positions end up benefiting you in the end when hard times come, since those roles are the first to go.
