How do Americans still not know how tariffs work?

Or that they already have a trade surplus with most of the world in terms of services, which - for developed economies - is preferable over a manufactured goods surplus?

Or that trying to achieve a surplus or even a 'balance' on goods traded threatens the dollar's reserve currency status, which by its very nature requires running trade deficits, without which the U.S. economy literally can't function since that allows for low interest rates for the government, low borrowing costs for consumers, and all the endless money-printing that they use to afford - among other things - military development and procurement?

This isn't even Economics 101, more like the bare minimum you should know before even considering the course.

these are not intellectuals. they see something they don't understand, believe it's bad and use brute force to get rid of it. it's Chesterton's Fence

Most people are stupid and don’t choose to learn or understand something they know nothing about. You know people think it’s a good thing they get a tax return right? They don’t understand that they overpaid taxes the fy and the government took to much so they pay back what they think they should. People should be more upset at tax returns but nope they look forward to them. I have just accepted most people are retarded. I pay attention to the news to see what they want normies to believe, I talk to them to get a baseline on the average American, then I invest.

Listen up libtard, you either drop the tarrifs you have on us or we enter a trade war, the grave train is over and US is DONE playing around

How do people not understand the print on trade agreements?

We are the freeest market in the world. Which means you all had less free markets than us. I am disinclined to believe you kept your markets less free than ours for our benefit.

As an American I don't mind suffering as long as I can increase Chinese and European unemployment.

Did the tariffs hurt you? Where did they touch you, Sally?

Honestly the whole point of this tariff business is to onshore enough manufacturing so that we can produce all of our weapons domestically in time for WW3, all the muh jerbs shit is a red herring to placate the MAGAchuds. The supply chains as they are now with critical weapons systems components being built and imported from overseas would kill us in a global war scenario, that's particularly why China is being targeted, other than that they are the main adversary in such a situation of course. Europoors are also on thin ice considering their governments are full of traitors to their own peoples and just generally corrupt and unreliable, so the other goal of these tariffs is to keep these "allies" in line. Obviously anyone serious knows the short term economic effects are negative but the belief is the long term effects outweigh them significantly, my retarded fren.

Shut up commie libtard.
President Trump says dem Taeriffs will make us rich. So rich that dem millionaires wont have to pay no more taxes. That sure sounds like winning to me.

but the belief is the long term effects outweigh them significantly

The long-term effects of... turning America into a closed, North Korea-style economy with no government support for domestic industry development? Trump even killed the CHIPS Act, which was supposed to reshore semiconductor manufacturing the America, so where exactly do you think all the factories will come from and how long are you prepared to face empty shelves nationwide? Because even if you did have government support (you don't), it's going to take decades at minimum to develop the necessary infrastructure, at a cost that's simply economically unfeasible at current US wage rates.

And again, you will have a non-functioning economy because you imploded the dollar's reserve currency status and kicked off a treasuries selloff while aligning all the world's economies against you.

Do you have even the barest understanding of what any of this means, exactly how much pain you're in for (unnecessarily even if the plan was reshoring) and for how long?

How come no two people can agree on how tariffs work?
Because no one knows anything if everyone is constantly lying, bullshiting and not citing sources or presenting evidence...

There is near unanimous consensus among economists that tariffs are self-defeating and have a negative effect on economic growth and economic welfare, while free trade and the reduction of trade barriers has a positive effect on economic growth.[2][3][4][5][6] American economist Milton Friedman said of tariffs: "We call a tariff a protective measure. It does protect . . . It protects the consumer against low prices."[7]

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tariff

thinks one side being massively disinformed and in denial means everyone else forgot how to do basic arithmetic

The entire world to the US: Tariffs for thee not for me

thinks deficits are tariffs

thinks deficits are bad when they literally prop up the US economy

doesn't understand the US isn't manufacturing anything most countries can afford

doesn't understand US runs a surplus on services

ignores that the US is far wealthier than most of the world and got that way through the current system

How is every American an economic neophyte?

even tariffs countries that have zero tariffs on America and with whom America even have a goods deficit anyway

Don't forget also tariffing/threatening tariffs on countries that America enjoys surpluses on both goods AND services.

It stems from unwillingness to admit that their edaddy is a fat retard

MAGA bio-robots have been convinced that global trade is a solely win/lose game, and that having a trade deficit of physical goods means that we're the loser cucks in a trade arrangement. That the only way to stop ourselves from being economically raped and cominated by Cambodia is to take our ball and go home, cutting off imports [but don't you thirdies DARE think about not buying our exports, or else we'll charge ourselves even more]. Once the Vietnamese sweatshops and Zimbabwean dirt-farmer jobs have been re-shored to their rightful place in America, we will finally be self-sufficient. Just in time for every other job to become automated by robots and AI.

You seem to be under the misguided notion that government subsidies are the only way to incentivize economic activity. Tariffs are merely negative reinforcement while subsidies are positive reinforcement. The US market is too lucrative to give up the ability to sell to, therefore semiconductor manufacturers are forced to invest in US domestic production to avoid paying the tariff. It's not a difficult concept for anyone with triple digit IQ.

It’s not just the trade deficit, it’s also the lack of jobs and the collusion of our government with foreign governments and businesses. Not to mention, the state is actively preparing for war with China. China is outside of US spook control and therefore an enemy. The onshoring is strategic, for better or worse.

Let us not forget too that the Chinese make shit products that break easily.

misguided

Except reshoring isn't just about avoiding tariffs, companies have to think about supply chains. Companies that want to reshore for stability require more than just tariffs/negative reinforcement; they need a supportive ecosystem, which includes infrastructure, skilled labor, R&D support, etc. This is what China is actively doing and has been doing since Trump 1.0 while America is focused on taxing its own consumer base into the ground since tariffs are effectively a regressive tax.

Successful reshoring needs a mixed strategy or it won't fucking work. You can have tariffs to disincentivize offshoring but you need to pair with subsidies, infrastructure investment, and workforce development to make domestic production feasible.

It's not a difficult concept for anyone with any IQ, which clearly isn't you.

What if Taiwan and Singapore are happy right now?

Trump2024.jpg - 901x769, 33.75K

China didn't put a gun to US companies and tell them to off-shore. And it makes everything up and down the value chain while america ONLY produces trash. For proof, you only need to ask Tesla owners, they will constantly tell you on forums how they prefer the ones built in China over those built in America.

And you're right, America is actively preparing for war with China, because it knows it can no longer compete with it economically. Funny thing is America would lose the hot war too.

I don't think you know how tariffs work. It has nothing intrinsic to do with trade surplus

Not to mention, the state is actively preparing for war with China.

Then the state sounds like a rabid animal that needs to be put down. Imagine dying in a war for oligarchs who would never in a million years send any of their number to die beside you.

It has nothing intrinsic to do with trade surplus

Which of course is why Trump calculated his tariff formula based solely on surplus vs deficits. You stupid fucking idiot.

OP blames Americans to not understand tariffs, and proceeds to talk about Trump antics. wew

There is nothing intrinsic about trade surplus, Trump uses it as a bargaining chip. Dimwit

OP blames Americans to not understand
