I thought it was like the 50s and 60s, but most Americans seem upset if you suggest changung taxes to resemble those eras. Top tax brackets were taxed like 91% in the 60s compared to the 35% now. The country has let billionaires run away with their money.

There was an article in Times back in the 60s I think about the "new rich," how America had now long abandoned the robber barons of old and while there were plenty of people who were VERY RICH, it was mostly those who inherited that wealth but the majority of the "new rich" were just, like, living in bigger houses and buying a couple of fishing boats (not yachts) and taking yearly trips to Europe but otherwise could still be found at the local bar drinking with their workers and sending their kids to the same school and stuff.

The solution seems pretty clear -- stop selling bonds to "finance" the government. Either have the Fed buy the bonds directly from the Treasury on the primary market at near-zero interest or just issue money to cover the deficits.
