If the EU did the same it would REALLY hurt the US as the EU has trade surplus with the US for services. And services are mostly profit while goods have narrow margins. When you pay for Facebook advertising that's mostly all gross profit.
When you sell a bmw to the US the gross profit is maybe 15% so if you import 100billions of tech services and export 120 billions of goods the reality is that the US makes a lot more profit, which is why it is richer.
