Is there another option? Even if manufacturing comes back to the U.S., and that's a massive IF, the factories are going to be fully automated. The tariffs are going to crush any small businesses that managed to survive covid and the only thing left will be the mega corporations that are already heavily investing in automation
I work in logistics for Best Buy and corporate is going very very hard into automation. We have a distribution center we're using as a trial for fully automated, self driving reach trucks that can work 24/7 moving pallets of product in and out of racks. We've put 50 of them in this one DC which is something like a $10 million investment. Every one of these trucks will replace a human that was getting paid $25-30/hr. It's gone very well and it's going to be rolled out heavily to our other DCs in the next few years.
Really the only part of our DC workflow that isn't ready to be fully automated with technology we have right now is unloading trucks because of how frequently product shifts around and pallets fall over during transit. This would require maybe 10-15 people for a warehouse that previously employed closer to 100. Regardless of whatever they might say publicly, every single person in corporate wants very badly to have a fully automated supply chain. Even more so now that we're prepared to get fucked by tariffs and need to be able to just turn the machines on and off as needed rather than trying to find busy work for an entire warehouse of employees who will riot if volume and hours are low.
There is no scenario where manufacturing comes back to the U.S. in a way that employs people. Any company building new factories is building them to be automated. The only thing keeping many places from being automated already is that they were built with humans in mind.

Trump , whether intended or not, is simply creating the conditions for industrialists to use the new technology (AI and robotics) to break new path instead of letting China overcome it faster and become the primer global superpower in 50 years or less.

USA had huge tariffs during the Gilded Age and that didn't stop it from overcoming England or France. Same happened with China in modern times, which for all intents and purposes, has already surpassed the USA in PPP almost a decade ago.
