I don't think there's much to reason about here.

(1) 54% of the US federal government's $5 trillion annual revenue comes from income tax, so about $2.7 trillion. For comparison, the value of all US goods imports in 2024 was $3.3 trillion. Keeping in mind that high tariffs would cause imports to plummet, it's obviously not viable to replace a large portion of income tax with tariffs.

(2) It would obviously not be doing poor people a favor to reduce a progressive tax (income tax) just to replace it with a regressive tax (sales tax)

(3) The flip flopping on tariffs is obviously damaging the economy. It's impossible for businesses to read any clear signal that lets them figure out what he's going to actually do, which means they can't plan

Even if the tariffs are still in place, the flip flopping in rhetoric means businesses are likely to hold off on major decisions, because the tariffs could be rolled back again at any time. Unless Trump establishes clarity that lets businesses make decisions, the uncertainty will have a strong paralyzing effect on investments and thus become unsustainable.

Its both because, as someone who hates Trump, one of the least worst things about him is that he does change his mind, and often radically flip flops on underlying strategy or principals based on the last convincing person he spoke with. Because to Trump its all about the appearance of things, the optics, not the way of achieving anything real.

You have to think from the perspective of a person born into wealth, who has never actually worked a day in his life, never actually directly ran a business, or solved any real problems, he only played a business man on TV. Trump does very little work managing the businesses he owns, everything just happened in the background by the people he hires. To him things just work out and its all about marketing or branding, because he made most of his money on reality TV and his last name as a brand.
