Moving to Thailand...

Moving to Thailand, paying £6k to rent a massive apartment and running your own business / working remotely seems to be the new meme. But has anyone here actually tried it? There must be downsides.

I don't like living amongst bugs, especially where 100% of the males will spit in your food for being foreign scum and fucking their women.

There must be downsides

Earthquakes I guess.

100% of the males will spit in your food for being foreign scum and fucking their women.

This should be standard in every country
But thais usually wont even do that, especially if you are where white woman are.

Visa issues are the most annoying part for me. I wanted to make a video game in Thailand. For that I need a desk and multiple monitors. Imagine leaving the country on a visa run and you are denied re-entry. Seems like a major pain in the fucking ass. Maybe you can pay someone off for a longer visa or something. Or maybe a learning visa where you study Thai or Kickboxing or something. But then you have to fuck around with that instead of your job. Basically I learned every poor country really does not want foreign people coming in. For one reason or another they desperately don’t want jobs or money. I’m not saying they are stupid. It could be for good reason. But it is what it is.

It illegal to work on a tourist visa in thailand and 6k a month in rent is beating out the locals salary by a factor of 10.

yeah it's quoite annoying. here in the west I have to deal with replacement migration from people coming here to steal my tax money. At the same time I'm strictly prohibited from going to SEA and contributing to their shit economies because they actually have rules like how 51% of a building has to be owned by Thais

There must be downsides

too many trannies to fuck

Not allowing foreign people to buy houses should be the policy of any country. It would solve most of the house crisis in the west.

Thailand is overrated, it's not even that cheap and the infrastructure is awful. The traffic in Bangkok is some of the worst I've ever experienced.

There must be downsides

humidity, heat, earthquakes, trannies, parasites and shitting your guts out for a month until you get acclimated to the food

yep but that would be antisemitic

Hitler did it yes

paying £6k rent

Are you renting the biggest mansion in the country?

What the fuck are you even talking about? Who the fuck is paying 6k EUR in Thailand? A decent apartment is 1k usd.

Been there done that. I’ve fucked 100s of Thai hookers

Remote working in Thailand is the new meme

Nigga you are like 10 years late. The golden age of that was Chiang mai around 2016.

Only dork faggot tech workers who smell their own farts in a wine glass go to chiang mai. Really slayers go to pattaya. Fucking loser

£6k to rent a massive apartment in a thirdie country with noguns and ladyboys

could just spend $1500 to move outside las vegas in a reasonable apartment sized for a bachelor

have way better entertainment opportunities

The main benefit would be other than insulting the king of Thailand, they won't go after you for social media posts, so that's nice, and knife crime is probably far lower.

Nobody remote work from Pattaya lmao too many distractions.
Relax anon, we hate the same people, the only good thing about the corona meme was killing the tech bullshit bubble in Chiang Mai.

ive seen the kind of people that go to thailand and the thought of one of you calling other people losers is hilarious

I took a flight that connected to Thailand. Everyone on that plane was a fucking freak. I think one old man was trying to hit on me on the flight. Weird euros who looked like they molested their kid. Aggressive looking weirdos looking like they barely hold it together. I get what you mean 1000%.

Thailand is overrated, it's not even that cheap and the infrastructure is awful. The traffic in Bangkok is some of the worst I've ever experienced.

75% true
My SEA girlfriend and I went to live in bangkok for a year to try it out, but I make $25-30k per month USD and was looking at $1400 to $2200 per month places; some $3k spots are baller too. If I was looking for bottom dollar living, I'd immediately leave bangkok and phuket because it simply isn't it. That said, I'll get into why I don't care for bottom dollar budget living any more.

Traffic can be mitigated by paying the premium to live close to the stuff you'd like to do, taking motorcycle taxis instead of cars. RIP rainy season.

The costs and the traffic weren't really what give me second thoughts about bangkok. it's that the expat network are bums, trashy, or too unstable for a relationship. after meeting over 100 people, there was probably ONE regular guy that had a gf I could go do couples stuff with. muh passport bros!! LOL they're barely even dating

Visa issues are the most annoying part for me.

just get an education or DTV visa? there are definitely easier countries to move to, but this is not unsolvable

Rage quitting developed country life is not just for divorced boomers and incels now. Failed normie westerners, japanese, koreans, and chinese are also dropping out too

Only dork faggot tech workers who smell their own farts in a wine glass go to chiang mai

westerners in chiang mai are 80% unemployed

Visa issues are the most annoying part for me. I wanted to make a video game in Thailand.

That's something I've been thinking about doing for awhile. I saved up 300k USD in retirement accounts and another 250k in crypto, which is about 1800/mo with the 4% rule if I sold everything.
That's probably just enough to survive with a comfortable lifestyle in Thailand on a small budget, and try to earn a living with game dev. I also found the visa shit is too shitty. I want to be able to stay for a year+ and just work on video games, but nothing there seems to be possible except the elite visa but that's like 20k for 5yrs, which is insane.
I looked at similar lower cost of living countries like the philippines and others, but they have similar visa issues. I found mexico would let me on a permanent visa due to my savings, but their cost of living is surprisingly high, and infrastructure and instability in areas with lower cost of living isn't really sufficient.

I think I could do it with an education visa, but I'm still apprehensive because it would likely be a one way trip. I'm in a rent controlled apartment, I have a comfy 75k/year job (55k take home, 16k/year savings). If I left and things didn't work out and I had come back it would be hard to get another job, and my rent would be at least an extra 500/mo more than what I pay now.
I'll probably just keep working another 5-10 years, as long as my investments don't blow up that should put me in a spot where I could replace my salary entirely and work on gamedev without having to move.

Kek pattaya must be the worst place there besides phuket. Chiagn mai is cheap and nice

Why go thailand when japan exists.
Lil weekend trip to korea will refresh you 90 days yourist visa as well.

Yeah you will be in Thailand with those strange people around you

I would only move to Thailand for easy access to ladyboys, but then I'd have to ask myself if being an expat for this is really worth it.

also I visited for a few weeks, only went to a few cities.
bangkok - fun, lots to do, but crowded, bad traffic, noisy, but everyone seemed generally friendly, scammers in tourist areas were plain to see.
chiang mai - nice area, cool city, better weather (outside burning season), people had a weirder vibe though, they were either friendly or it was plainly obvious they were putting on a facade of friendliness, which is fine, just gave me weird vibes.
pattaya - seemed more geared to be a party city, if that's what you want you'll enjoy it but not my type of thing. ended up getting sick for a few days and not doing much when i was there so maybe there's more to it but that seems to be everyone's impression as well.

I didn't think it would bother me but the lack of english speaking and not being able to easily communicate starts to get to you after awhile, you really feel foreign when every restaurant requires saying what you want multiple times before they understand, or having to resort to grunting and pointing to order, or always hearing music that's non-english. idk maybe that shit is obvious, but feeling it first hand hits different.

Why go thailand when japan exists.

you want the real answers?
better english in thailand
less social rigidity in thailand
expats that look like they work out every day vs ones that look like they study japanese and watch anime every day (also a matter of taste but I don't think there's half a kilogram of muscle mass in tokyo)
japan wins on food
thailand wins on housing and gyms
thailand no winter
I'd prefer to take a private grab instead of a shared train.
financially mog locals in either country

Polluted shithole. Your lungs won't know what hit them after a couple of months in most Asian cities.

I didn't think it would bother me but the lack of english speaking and not being able to easily communicate starts to get to you after awhile, you really feel foreign when every restaurant requires saying what you want multiple times before they understand

valid concern. alleviated by making english speaking expat or local bilingual friends and spending more time with them. doubly so if you get an english speaking thai gf

That's something I've been thinking about doing for awhile. I saved up 300k USD in retirement accounts and another 250k in crypto, which is about 1800/mo with the 4% rule if I sold everything.

good good, but you also seem well aware that you're in (low) "six figure hell", which you dive into more later. you know it's not enough to last forever

That's probably just enough to survive with a comfortable lifestyle in Thailand on a small budget, and try to earn a living with game dev. I also found the visa shit is too shitty. I want to be able to stay for a year+ and just work on video games, but nothing there seems to be possible except the elite visa but that's like 20k for 5yrs, which is insane.

a few of my friends bit the bullet on elite, but they made it to 7 figures+. why not get a DTV which gives you 5 years?

I looked at similar lower cost of living countries like the philippines and others, but they have similar visa issues. I found mexico would let me on a permanent visa due to my savings, but their cost of living is surprisingly high, and infrastructure and instability in areas with lower cost of living isn't really sufficient.

Philippines is drop dead easy visa. just keep extending at the immigration offices. easiest place to live on tourist visas ever, but it would suck on your budget even if they made you a citizen.

I think I could do it with an education visa, but I'm still apprehensive because it would likely be a one way trip. I'm in a rent controlled apartment, I have a comfy 75k/year job (55k take home, 16k/year savings). ya you're noticing that you'd be lowering your stability and for what? you wouldn't even have good cash to really enjoy thailand all that much unless you upped your burn rate.

I'll probably just keep working another 5-10 years, as long as my investments don't blow up that should put me in a spot where I could replace my salary entirely and work on gamedev without having to move.

sounds smart

vietnam would perhaps be a better option, because you could teach english if the going gets tough, to make 1.5-2k/month. better if you can just bring a remote job or get your game dev off the ground first though.

What tools do you game dev with?

colombia is the real place to be.

if yall too scared to get robbed i understand. but if youre street smart and can handle yurself in jail and have a problem with authrotiy. then colombia is for you.

colombia is the real place to be.

proceeds to list zero pros to Colombia; just presents a list of personality traits required to unlock....some underlying reward.

if yall too scared to get robbed i understand. but if youre street smart and can handle yurself in jail and have a problem with authrotiy. then colombia is for you.

the whores in colombia are on another level
but your street smarts need to go up to survive because the women there will eat you alive

expats that look like they work out every day

Are you a woman or why is this supposed to be a good thing? Easier to mog in japan. More rigid but also have to worry less about shady shit and getting drugged. As foreinger you get a free pass anyway. Maybe I enjoyed japan too much because I was doing copium amounts of amphetamine, but tokyo as well as the islands in the south were fucking amazing. And all civilised and safe. Comfy and cheap inland flights or bullet trains allow you to travel fast and easy

Are you a woman or why is this supposed to be a good thing? Easier to mog in japan

While true, I'm not really working on having sex for the first time or getting a girlfriend.

jokes aside, it is a matter of taste and indicative of the overall lifestyle of the place.

japan has shit gyms, shit work culture for locals, and a winter. thailand has infrastructure for people (including us) to keep our bodies healthy and can go outside every day if you don't mind the heat.

More rigid but also have to worry less about shady shit and getting drugged

agreed and valid, although I find thailand to be very safe outside of traffic and these budding russian areas.

I'm also intending to potentially root down in Asia i.e. local wife + kids + private school for them, etc

Hapa thais are accepted, because almost everything under the sun is accepted in thailand. With Japan they'd be cooked, as neat as it would be

They don't want foreigners coming in and behaving irresponsibly with their money and fucking up the local economy or trying to build a power base. It is a perfectly reasonable approach to take assuming the spook of "nation" guides your policy.

If you’re white it doesn’t make sense. But for me I found myself to be way happier in Thailand. Maybe it’s because it’s my motherland. I don’t really see the appeal if you’re white as you still have dating options in the West. For me dating was way easier in Thailand and I felt at home. I’m planning on making the move the end of the year. Easier for me since I have family there and I don’t have to lump in with all the rest of the loser farangs in Bangkok. Women are prettier and more feminine than Western women.

vietnam would perhaps be a better option, because you could teach english if the going gets tough, to make 1.5-2k/month.

might be a possibility, I didn't look too much into it but I've heard good things about vietnam. teaching english is something i'd like to avoid of course.

better if you can just bring a remote job

yeah that would make my life easier. the only reason my current job isn't entirely remote is because of my manager's boss is an old boomer and wants to keep everyone in the office. it's possible he might retire in the next few years though.
we even closed another office in a nearby city and everyone there got to switch to working remote, yet we still have to go in, it's such nonsense.

or get your game dev off the ground first though.

that's the dream, i work on gamedev stuff outside of work but it's hard to work fulltime and do it consistently, just takes so much energy and attention. i made the retarded mistake of overscoping my projects as well, so I've been working on trying to narrow down the focus so i have a product i can release.

What tools do you game dev with?

blender for 3d modeling/animating/rigging/uvmapping
inkscape+gimp for minor texture editing
cursor + claude for help coding
used to use unity but switched to unreal a few years ago and i've been more productive with it
doing some experimental work with LLMs as well but that's not a huge focus, but there's so much opportunity for innovation with them.

If you’re white it doesn’t make sense.

Why not? In the last sentence of your post, you allude to exactly why it makes sense. the thai girlfriends I've had
>But for me I found myself to be way happier in Thailand. Maybe it’s because it’s my motherland.
it's more than just that, but that's a huge boon. If I had a middle class+ family network in one of these countries, I'd be so overpowered it's unreal

I don’t really see the appeal if you’re white as you still have dating options in the West. For me dating was way easier in Thailand and I felt at home.

Why do asian males seem to think there aren't a boat load of failed normie white guys that don't make the cut with non-fat cuties in USA? Your USA problem wasn't just being asian; a lot of guys are down bad.

I’m planning on making the move the end of the year. Easier for me since I have family there and I don’t have to lump in with all the rest of the loser farangs in Bangkok.

bangkok farangs are 90% and absolute dump pile. This one thai girl Mint farms them for baht on meetup.com tho. she charges like 250-300 per head just to have them sit and play basic games with each other at a bar lol. she doesn't even partake

Women are prettier and more feminine than Western women.

This.

I would think it would be similar to how I feel as a Chang in the West. You would feel like an outsider. My life is pretty great right now but the people, culture, family ties, and dating are what’s making me make the jump and move to Thailand. People in the West are way too selfish and egotistical.

I would think it would be similar to how I feel as a Chang in the West. You would feel like an outsider.

A bit, yes, but ultimately still possible to pick up a QT girlfriend and spark up a family unit. Once you're at the family stage of life, social circles tighten up anyways, so it's OK to not have super broad appeal.

My life is pretty great right now but the people, culture, family ties, and dating are what’s making me make the jump and move to Thailand.

The dating and safety of thailand (and other overseas places) are a total game changer. Excited for your move man

People in the West are way too selfish and egotistical.

no idea wtf went wrong with boomers but they're absolutely evil and own too much financially and control too much politically
