It could be serious. Population shrinkage is exponential. The reason the rate is below replacement is important, but do we know what that reason really is?

If the reason scales with absolute population (we stop reproducing because there are too many of us, but start again when too few) we're fine.
However if the cause is something that does not change with a decrease in population we are screwed badly and soon.

The "after" looks like; global labour arbitrage dramatically closing, people moving back to places previously known as the "global south" with jobs earlier on in the supply chain to get paid more for the now relatively higher demand resources, everything globally costing more, everyone remaining behind in what was know as the "global north" earning less than they relatively did historically, and total global wealth distribution remaining high or increasing further. Boomers have created and signed off on a hellish ultra materialistic world where helping others, even their own children, is a sign of weakness, and then they turn around and ree that their kids don't want to also have kids, at least not until they jumped through all the hoops society laid out in front of them which doesn't happen until at least 40. The only way to really fix this problem that is probably never going to happen is a complete overhaul of the education system. Children shouldn't be held captive until 22-26 before they are allowed to make money to build their future. School needs to be abolished and replaced with vocational work where you make money as you learn. Then people will feel financially secure enough to breed while they can still pop out healthy children. But this threatens the status quo so boomers will reee and fight back against such a future until their final breath.
